Our Weaning Journey – Vegetables with Cow & Gate Friends

In my experience both Spoon-Led and Baby-Led weaning are equally effective and it’s purely up to the parent to decide which method suits them best. I’ve done both methods and am currently doing a mix of both with P3.

You are advised to introduce flavours and ingredients one at a time to make sure that your baby isn’t allergic to anything. In my experience babies love the fruity flavours and happily swallow without a bat of an eyelid but when it comes to veggies, there’s always an issue. Even now I’m fussy with vegetables, they are such a mixture of bland and strange flavours aren’t they!?

Well I welcome Cow & Gate Friends My First Spoon pouches. Four savoury pouches introducing individual vegetable flavours. Broccoli, Carrot, Peas and Cauliflower. Each pouch contains just the vegetable itself and water for cooking, absolutely nothing else. The vegetables are steam-cooked to preserve all the goodness inside.

They are designed to be the first flavours you introduce when doing spoon-led weaning and the pouches are much smaller than the usual pouches I’ve had before which means there will be less food wasted after. It’s suggested that you stick with the one flavour for a while before moving on to the next, after all it’s highly unlikely they’ll be jumping for joy after one spoonful of cauliflower!

What I love about the new Cow & Gate Friends range is that the veggie flavours are not hidden by fruity, sweeter flavours. They also have a whole range to compliment the weaning diet. Sticking with the four vegetables from the My First Spoon range to help children with familiarity. Here are the following flavours and stages:

From 6 months they introduce two more flavours to the veggies (95p per pouch)

  • Carrot, Potato and Beef.
  • Broccoli, Potato and Chicken.
  • Cauliflower, Potato and Cheese.
  • Peas, Sweetcorn and Potato.

6months

From 7 months they are introduced to a slightly more textured pouch with a few more flavour combinations (£1.29 per pouch)

  • Carrot, Tomato, Beef and Pasta.
  • Broccoli, Chicken and Rice.
  • Cauliflower, Cheese and Pasta.
  • Peas, Potato and Cod.

7months

From 10 months there are more flavours added, still sticking with the four main veggies and adding a little more texture. They are not in squeeze pouches but are in a handy tearable/cuttable pouch (£1.79 per pouch) –

  • Carrot, Lentils and Pork.
  • Broccoli, Cheese and Pasta.
  • Cauliflower, Potato and Beef.
  • Peas, Sole Fish and Potato.

10months

I really love the new Cow & Gate Friends range. We have been using the My First Spoons with P3 and although she certainly isn’t keen on the flavours, it has help her to accept them a little better and helps me to feel better that she is getting veggies in her diet. At just 75p per pouch for the starter vegetables they are such good value. Cow & Gate have also created a little starter pack with all four of the vegetables included which costs £2.79.
