If your home is looking a little tired, but, you do not have the time to redecorate, read on. Below, I share with you a few ways to quickly freshen things up. Implementing most of them won’t cost you a fortune.
Sort out your tatty skirting boards
Most people’s skirting boards are badly scuffed and dented. Getting down on your hands and knees and rubbing them down for hours so that they can be painted is a pain. Quite literally – by the time you finish everything aches. Worse than that, you can usually still see a few dents and dings. There is an alternative which is to buy and install some mdf skirting.
Because they are made from a composite material, they are far cheaper than many people realise. But, they are also very durable. The compression process used to make them means that these skirting boards are very dense. So, they do not scratch or dent easily. Even better, there are no shrinkage issues. Once they are in place they will look good for many years to come, decades even.
So, if you want to sort your skirting boards out once and for all, order some MDF ones online. You do not need any special tools and you can learn how to lay composite skirting board from YouTube or the retailer’s website.
De-clutter and deep clean
This job is best broken up and done across the course of a few weeks. It takes a lot of energy to de-clutter and deep clean a room. If you try to do it all at once, by the time you get to the 3rd or 4th room the chances are you will be so tired that you will not do a good job.
It is far better to do one room per weekend or something like that. First, go through everything and remove anything you no longer like or need. If you are going to sell them on the Facebook marketplace or eBay, photograph those items before boxing them up. That way, one evening you can sit down and just list them all for sale.
If there is anything you are not sure about, put it into a bin bag, seal it and leave it in the garage. If, after 8 or 9 months, you have not opened the bag to get something out, you do not need any of it. So, you are safe getting rid of it.
Once you have de-cluttered you can deep clean. Don’t forget to clean the lighting fixtures and bulbs. It is surprising how much brighter your home will feel when you do this.
Update your wall hangings
One room at a time, update your wall hangings. You can do this with pictures, photos, stickers or items you have made yourself. If you are on a tight budget consider reframing instead. Or simply swap one set of artwork for another. Moving a photo from one room to another can make a surprisingly big difference.
