“Stopping off for a short break in bed before doing it all over again”

In the past two weeks I have gone from being a mother with disturbed sleep to an extreme sleep deprivated mum. I am beyond the most exhausted I’ve ever felt in my entire life.

P2 has been battling with a nasty cough that seems to be lasting forever which has caused her to wake even more than usual, one night was as bad as nearly every half hour to a hour. If you’ve read this blog for a while you’ll know she’s not a good sleeper anyway but the past few weeks have been torture. She’s back in the habit of asking for milk, and getting it, because quite frankly I have had no energy to fight that battle whilst also attempting to keep P1 and P3 sleeping.

Which leads me on to the other little terror causing me to spend less and less time snuggled in bed as each day passes. P3. Her sleep has always been relatively good in comparison to P2s, waking once when we go to bed and then again around 4-5am, then up for the day at 7. For the past few weeks she’s been suffering with teething problems and now it’s a high temperature from the immunisations she had last week.

I’m spending my entire day meeting the demands of over tired children, battling my own emotions and then spending the whole night running between P2 and P3, stopping off for a short break in bed before doing it all over again every hour or so. I seriously have no idea how much more my body can take of this. I feel myself losing concentration and slurring my words, forgetting things and finding it hard to manage my emotions.

I’d love to know what the long term effect is of disturbed sleep. I wish there was some magic cure or that the girls would just suddenly flip a sleep switch. It’s been nearly three years since I experienced a full, undisturbed night in my own bed.

  1. I’m so sorry you’re going through this, it sounds horrendous. Sleep deprivation really is awful. My daughter has always been a bad sleeper and she had a terrible cough a week ago but luckily she is better now. Hope your daughter is better soon and you manage to get some sleep x

  2. It is so hard isn’t it! We have been incredibly busy with moving house lately and Sienna has started waking earlier than normal, I feel sleep deprived too! Argh! We just have to get on with it though don’t we!

      There’s no other option unfortunately. Although a nice weekend away with my hubby and sending the kids to grandparents would help 🙂

  3. My heart goes out to you! It’s so hard to be a mom when everyone is sleep deprived. I find that just when I feel like things aren’t ever going to get better they do – but it never feels like it when you’re in the middle of a long run of no sleep!

  4. I know this all too well unfortunately! my ten week old is a full blown sleep assassin and my two year old has also started waking up every night, perfect timing too! I’m pretty sure my bloodstream is 50% coffee…. YAWN!! xx

  5. Do you know what, it has been nearly 3 years since I had a full night’s sleep too. Mental. How do we cope!? I don’t know how mums go back to work on such little sleep like this. I’m sorry you are going through a tougher time than usual at the moment, it is awful when the kids are poorly or teething or just generally not sleeping. I find it so hard to keep my patience in check. Hugs from one zombie mother to another x

  6. Sleep deprivation is actually a form of torture!! I feel your pain it feels like one or the other of the boys is up all night at the moment. Or one wakes the other. I just have no energy.

  7. Sleep deprivation is horrible, it just makes everything worse. I always say that babies would be so much easier if they slept all night every night, imagine that? Always being rested, it would make tantrums easier and everyone happy! I got through it all without caffeine and a baby who had to be rocked to sleep for all her naps at bedtime, a total of 6 hours of me standing up and rocking some days, mixed with awful anxiety too, it was a rough time! So much so I’m not having any more! This is why I love blogging, there is so much support out there 🙂 x

  8. Oh bless you! My eldest doesn’t wake up in the night – unless she is unwell but my youngest on the other hand is the one that makes me want to go to bed early because she wakes up in the night wanting juice, every single night she will wake up but goes through a phase where she will sleep all night but very rarely. She will also wake up 6-6.30am every morning! x

      Thank you Kate. A bit of a better night last night, every night is different and I think that’s the hardest part about it all.

  11. My goodness how awful for you. You must be emotionally and physically drained. I suppose your body is getting used to it but that’s no consolation at all. I’m so sorry but I can’t suggest anything. I wouldn’t say caffeine from late afternoon on as that won’t allow you to sleep. Maybe as winter comes the kids will sleep better xx
