Jim Jams Hazelnut Chocolate Spread 83% Less Sugar Review

Hazelnut chocolate spread has become a firm favourite in this family. The girls love to have it in a sandwich or on toast every morning. It is literally the only thing I can get them all to eat. There was a big uproar about the leading brand of hazelnut chocolate spread and it honestly shocked me, yet I didn’t really know a better alternative and so carried on the way we had been.

Then I was approached by Mumsnet to try out Jim Jams Hazelnut Chocolate Spread.. I had never heard of this brand before but it was said to be much better for you. In fact it has 83% less sugar than the leading brand and that benefit alone definitely got my ears listening hard.

Jim Jams Hazelnut Chocolate Spread has maltitol as the sweetener. Maltitol is found is some fruits and is a much healthier sugar substitute. It has half of the calories, is kinder on your teeth and is actually diabetic friendly as it has a lesser effect on blood glucose. There is also a tiny amount of palm oil used.

I am always interested to see if healthier foods and even better for you alternatives, tastes just as nice as the original thing. Because lets face it, sugary things are always so tasty. On first impressions, the packaging is really bold and cute. I actually saw them for the first time in the supermarket the other day and was instantly drawn.

I opened the jar. It smelt the same, looks the same but the texture is actually smoother. The smoother consistency makes it easier to spread and you don’t need to use as much to cover the slice of bread.

P1 was my taste testing subject as she is little Miss Picky. I didn’t tell her that it was a different brand. I watched her as she delved in to her sandwich. After she’d finished I asked her what her verdict was. She honestly looked at me like I was crazy. I can take that as a good sign. She didn’t notice I’d changed the chocolate spread to a healthier alternative.

I then moved on to spreading the chocolate spread on some crumpets for my own breakfast. I did notice a difference in the taste. It tasted more flavoursome and real, if that makes any sense. You can really taste the nutty chocolate flavour. I really liked it.

It does have a slightly higher price tag in comparison to the leading brand as the size of the jar is quite small. But I do think it is worth spending the extra money to give my family a healthier start to the day and a much nicer treat too.

  2. I’ve never actually tried a hazelnut chocolate spread – I can’t face anything sweet in the mornings.

  3. Mmm, looks so yummy! It worries me the amount of sugar in some products… I always think there must be more they can do to reduce it. I had not heard of maltitol before.

  4. yum! We love chocolate spread in my house. I tend to make my own so its sugar-free but this looks good when I’m short on time! x

  5. This looks so good! I’ve been having Nutella on toast every day lately for ease, a healthier alternative sounds brilliant xx
